CLEMSON Even though Clemson plays Georgia Tech each year, there aren’t many players on the Tigers’ defense with significant game experience against the Yellow Jackets.Strongside linebacker Dorian O’Daniel, weakside linebacker Ben Boulware and cornerback Cordrea Tankersley are the only Clemson defenders who have played 70 or more snaps against Georgia Tech.No others have played more than 40.Of the 24 players listed on this week’s defensive depth chart, 13 have never played any defensive snaps against Georgia Tech, including five listed starters:pandora bracelets jewelrym98n54 defensive end Clelin Ferrell, defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, middle linebacker Kendall Joseph, cornerback Marcus Edmond and free safety Van Smith. That could be a reason for concern. While Clemson has played three games this year, Georgia Tech’s triple option offense presents a significantly different scheme.»Typically, when you play week to week, there’s some of your base principles that you carry forward to the next opponent,» said Clemson coach Dabo Swinney. «When you play Georgia Tech, they’re just so different. You just don’t see that anywhere else. So it’s truly a game and season of its own when you play these guys.»On a short week of preparation in advance of Thursday’s game, defensive coordinator Brent Venables has had to work hard to get his players caught up. Clemson’s young defenders, though, are confident they will be ready for the new challenge.»We put in work over the summer, in fall camp (to prepare for Georgia Tech),» Ferrell said. «To be ready for them, we just got to buy into the plan.»Clemson’s other starting defensive end, Christian Wilkins, played 26 snaps against Georgia Tech last year, but at defensive tackle. With two new starters at his position, defensive ends coach Marion Hobby has emphasized the importance of playing with discipline and setting the edge against their run heavy opponent this week.»It’s different than what I had to do last year, playing inside. It’s a lot different, actually. And I’m just really going to have to do my job,» Wilkins said. «But I think as a defense, we’ll be fine, and we’ve all been working hard this week so that we can try and get a good result on Thursday.»At the linebacker level, Joseph says it has been a «very difficult» week preparing for an offense he’s never before played against.»It’s just going to take a lot of eye discipline and just really focusing on my keys,» Joseph said. «If your eyes are in the wrong spot, it will really mess you up.»Clemson’s secondary will also be put to the test because of the Yellow Jackets’ ability to pass deep out of play action. Tankersley and safeties Jadar Johnson and Korrin Wiggins are the only players in that unit with experience against Georgia Tech.»When you’re in option defense, you’re in option coverages, so there’s a lot of one on one,» said Venables of the secondary. «So it’s a tremendous stress on those guys.»Altogether, Venables said the key to success for his young defenders is to maintain their discipline play after play, as Georgia Tech will try to wear them down.»I’m excited to see them go out and play and compete. They’ve looked pretty good, like they’ve got a decent understanding, but you just don’t know,» Venables said. «You have to play 60 minutes against (Georgia Tech), and they’re going to keep doing what they do over and over and over.»
